If a constant in the world of the automobile, it is redesigned every vehicle becomes larger, more powerful, heavier and more complex. Bucking this trend is the latest Mazda MX-5, one of the smallest and lightest cars sold in the United States.
Since the launch of the Miata in 1989, Mazdas little roadster was a beacon of light for those who prefer driving experience "pure". The heart of the mission of the MX-5 to be a lightwei ght, affordable convertible two places has not changed. More impressive: 2016 MX-5 is about the same size as the original Miata, and the new roadster is only 182 pounds heavier despite producing 50 percent more power and are 30 percent more fuel efficient . The price tag was also held in check. The 2016 model still costs about the same as a midsize sedan.
Making it even more special MX-5 is that it is the only one in America. Of course, Alfa is now selling their expensive and sexy 4C here, BMW still has a Z4 roadster, and Scion and Subaru are selling their two-door coupe - but none of them are like the MX-5 and is good for Mazda.
Let curb weight and MSRPs first, as they are essential to understanding this roadster.
based, six-speed manual MX-5 tipped the scales at 2,332 pounds and ends at 2,381 pounds with the six-speed automatic and all checked options. This means that the new Miata is actually 150 pounds lighter than its immediate predecessor. More interesting is the comparison with the Miata 190: the fourth generation MX05 is only 180 pounds more than the original
Not impressed.? Consider the now standard safety features that are not even available 25 years ago - side impact airbags, the most severe side impact standards and belt pretensioners and force limiters security. Then consider the comforts such as navigation, Bluetooth and touchscreen infotainment we did not have in 190.
Still not impressed? The 2016 MX-5 is actually lighter as carbon fiber monocoque Alfa Romeo 4C in America.
You may be scratching your head if you are reading this outside of North America. You see, the international versions of the Alfa Romeo and Mazda two-seaters are lighter than their brothers and s isters plump American. 4C in Europe is a slim 2,153 pounds, and the MX-5 is 20. The American MX-5 weight gains because it receives a larger engine - with an additional 29 horsepower and 37 lb.-ft. of torque match . 4C, however, is gaining weight because the European version does not meet US crash standards. Alfa Romeo had to significantly change the carbon fiber tub and add side airbags for it to be sold. The total number of the Alfa side is a substantial 342 pounds - and security does not bring power and more torque
The lightweight Miata always has a price tag svelte .. From $ 25.735 (after $ 820 destination) and ending at $ 35,750, the MX-5 is just a tad more expensive than the 190 model for inflation. Much of the draw of the Miata is its accessibility; for less than a Honda Accord EX, you can put a rear-wheel drive roadster in the garage.
Exterior
The Miata has never been on the breakneck speed or weird looks. This is also true for the Miata as it was in 190. Although 2016 seems more wicked and chiseled, it is immediately recognizable as a Miata. This is because Mazda does not grafted their last look at the MX-5. Instead, designers penned a modern tribute to the original. The unique look has a large LED spotlights black grille opening and Angry Birds inspired on each model. Unfortunately, in states that require a front license plate, the look is a little Bucky Beaver
Turn the car 0 degrees and you will always see the profile of a classic British roadster :. Long hood, short passenger compartment and trunk perky. At the rear, the look is a little more in tune with the rest of the Mazda range, with the taillights of style after the Mazda6. Mazdas obsession with weight savings means you will not find massive dual exhaust tips, spoilers or anything that is not absolutely necessary electrical.
Interior
As the Alfa Romeo 4C, the ultra-lightweight construction means sacrifices inside. Unlike Alfa, Mazda designers are not willing to do too many sacrifices. Accordingly, the two companies have different approaches to weight savings.
In the 4C, it just seems engineers threw pieces to save weight and the result is a fairly rigid cabin. At Mazda, it appears engineers were determined to make the MX-5 looks like your average Mazda inside while reducing the ounces that are not necessary. While Alfa avoids luxuries like carpets, soundproofing foam, padded armrests, usable cup holders, a navigation system and cubbies of storage, youll find it in the Mazda. Yet the Mazda is even lighter.
Though you still can not find power seats in the cabin (they add weight), standard seats of the MX-5 are more comfortable than the Scion, Subaru, or, yes, even the Alfa. This is not to say they are perfect, that the lumbar support is not available on any trim and Mazda uses a lighter mechanism that lifts the front of the seat base cushion for added support in the thigh instead of lift the solid bottom of the seat.
infotainment
Like most Mazdas, the MX-5 has a touchscreen infotainment system grafted onto the dashboard. The LCD screen of 7 inches reminds one iPad and Android and is standard on all trim levels. In the center console, we have a control knob iDrive / MMI-like with an array of buttons for direct access to certain menus. Like the Infiniti systems, you can navigate either with the controller, touch screen, or both depending on what is easier now - as long as youre parked. Touch functionality is locked greater than 5 mph, allowing only speech input and control button.
Smartphone application integration for streaming media is standard and customers can add navigation software on the screen even after the purchase of the car. Although some people seem to like the look, the software is intuitive and easy to use. Mazda promises of future applications will be integrated into the software, but we have not really seen a lot of movement in that direction since the system was launched in 2014 Mazda3. Yet it is light years from the cheezy stereo you find in the Alfa and at least one step ahead of anything in the FR-S and BRZ.
It is also noted in the MX-5 is the sound system. It has one. For $ 70,000, Alfa provides some speakers and an Alpine head unit of Best Buy. Because two security roadsters have little room for the rear speakers, most manufacturers simply do not install them. Mazda decided instead of Bose adapt some in the head restraints and the solution appears surprisingly natural. When using the integrated Bluetooth speaker, the voice of the other party comes out of the speakers leading the drivers side. This means you can hear the call even with the top down. Whether o r not they can hear you is a different story.
Training
While other global markets have to make do with a 1.5-liter four-cylinder making 129 horsepower, MX-5 to models of America get the engi ne to last four cylinder 2.0-liter Mazda. The direct injection engine is essentially the same as we find in the CX-5, but tweaked for the disposal of the rear-wheel drive MX-5. Power figures come in the same 155 ponies than the CX-5, but the torque drops to 2 lb-ft to 148 with a peak reaching 0 laps later than the Mazda crossover.
The reason why de-tune is probably due to the motor position and the space required for the jellyfish 4-2-1 exhaust manifold of Mazda (described below, with the " cover "removed from a Mazda3). The design of the manifold allows optimal evacuation of exhaust gas while keeping the snakes beam close to the catalytic converter for hot weather more rapidly upwards. On the downside, it is huge and difficult to pack in the MX-5 where his front suspension is close to the exhaust manifold. As a result, some changes had to be made and this is probably the reason for the change of the torque curve.
Sending power to the rear wheels is the choice of a manual six-speed transmission or six-speed automatic. If you opt for the manual six-speed and the Club of cut, there is a limited slip differential torque-sensing back. Unfortunately, LSD are not available in all the other trimmings
Thanks to its ultra-light weight sidewalk and modern design of the engine, the fuel economy of the MX-5 is impressive and premium gasoline is recommended only -. Not necessary. According to the EPA, the combined fuel economy is expected to average 30 mpg regardless of the transmission or trim choices, which is a huge 7 mpg jump from the previous Miata. Because US fuel standards, the SKYACTIV 2.0-liter engine Mazda uses a 13: 0 compression ratio by 14: 1 ratio in Europe, which, according to Mazda, resulting in a loss of efficiency 5 percent. Blame Washington
player
Obviously, with a naturally aspirated 2.0-liter four-cylinder under the hood, the acceleration numbers not breathtaking -. But they are still faster than the FR-S and BRZ.
Despite the Subie and Scion providing better power to weight ratio, the boxer engine they use very nervous just can not match low torque Mazda. Talking pure numbers, the MX-5 ran 0-30 in 2.0 seconds and hit 60 6.3 - about 2 / 10ths faster than the Scion or Subaru. Although not openly fast is the fastest MX-5 again. If you want a faster Miata, the Fiat 124 Spider - or "Fiata" - uses a good turbo engine of 1.4 liters for 0 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of twist. Although the turbo in the Fiat adds about 100 pounds, the power comes on earlier, the couple hangs longer and Fiat fiddled final drive ratios to sacrifice fuel economy on the altar of performance. Thank you in the se lection of tires on our club model and setting Brembo brakes optional 60-0 stopping distances were short and fade resistance was excellent.
The comparison of the MX-5 in the competition simply in terms of acceleration and horizontal gs would be missing the whole point of the roadster. (Although it still draws more Gs than Toyobaru.) Mazda is all about sensation. The clutch engagement is linear and the weight of the pedal is perfect (which is easy to do when you have a light weight vehicle and a motor that makes 148 lb-ft of torque). The manual shifter has short throws and a sensation that reminded me notchy BMW 0s The small dimensions and light weight allow relatively small tires that range from 195 / 50R16 to 205 / 45R17 summer rubber of our model. wider tires allow more grip, but, again, that would be missing the point. Be able to get the rear end of the MX-5 is to expel part of the fun.
When the road starts winding, you begin to understand how everything is. With a slight bias in weight before and the same front and rear tires, the MX-5 tends to understeer a hair in neutral handling situations. Add a little extra power and the rear end willingly turns and predictably. Even the little narrow tires play in the MX-5s tre atment. As Toyobaru, the MX-5 allows you to discover the joys of a rear wheel drive car well balanced sound speeds. Of course, the Audi S7 we recently examined the Alfa 4C or have limits that are much higher than the MX-5, but the Mazda is simply more fun. The Alfa is a hoot and a half to drive without question, but the very rear weight bias means that things can get unpredictable if you control deactivated stability. It should also be a greater concentration of lead to 9 / 10ths. Although 9 / 10ths of the MX-5 would be 6 / 10ths of the 4C, the Miata feels more natural, more easy going, less frenetic. When pitted against the Boxster and Z4, the Germans simply feel fat, heavy and isolated.
During a week of driving the MX-5 hard we still averaged an impressive 31.5 mpg, higher than average hair EPA and 9 mpg better than the last MX -5 I was driving. Your numbers are 25- or improved nearly 50 percent we have seen is a top of the economic drop. It is thanks to obsessive devotio n to limit the weight.
You might be surprised to hear the MX-5 has a fairly compliant suspension despite the emphasis on Zoom Zoom. Mazda realizes that many buyers intend to commute in their roadster and not have it sit in the garage. Even our tester w as equipped with Bilstein dampers and low-profile tires, was firm but not hard.
If the Miata looks too good to be true, there are some sore points. The first is the stability control. Although it can be disabled, programming softwares default leads to early intervention. I found it too intrusive on the roads that I knew well. The next is the direction. It is perfect for rack electric power steering - but it is still a rack electric power steering. (This is like saying, "the best cup of coffee in England." Yes, there is coffee, but it will still make you a little sad.) There is a hint of feedback, but this is not rack on your 190 Miata. (Hopefully someone will create a manual steering conversion.) The last element is the noise from the cabin. While our Club Sport model trades increased weight Brembo brakes for reduced weight of one top layer - but as you slice it, this cabin is far from Lexus quiet. The question is no road noise, it is wind noise. Due to the design window se als, there is a constant din of the mirrors of the area from the side. Even with the top dual-layer you find in other models, the noise behind the pilots head is excessive. I measured 76 dB at 50 mph, which is just 1/2 dB quieter than 4C. For the record, the 4C is the fastest car Ive tested in the last decade.
Miata comparisons are difficult. Aside from the Fiata recently announced, the MX-5 has few natural competition. It is priced in the same range as the FR-S and BRZ, but the Mazda roadster is a 2 seater, not a hardtop coupe with rear seats. The Saturn Sky, Pontiac Solstice and Honda S00 was clearly the Mazda in their sites, but they are all long gone. The Porsche Boxster and BMW Z3 old were slightly Spendier options for the buyer who wanted something light and fun, but also have given way to newer versions that are bigger, larger and more expensive . Alfa Romeo and Lotus competition will cost two to three times as likely to buy and eat you out of house and home on maint enance.
With little real competition, why bother with an overhaul of all? Excellent question. If my car had been stingy in charge, Mazda would always sell the Miata more with a new infotainment system and some new color options. Be glad Im not in Mazda performance. Instead, we get a new look at the original mission of the Miata: .. The ultimate affordable roadster
